Mid vs Low Hiking Shoes: Which One Do You Actually Need?
A mid boot wraps more of your ankle. A low shoe doesn't. Here's what that actually changes, and when the extra cuff height is worth carrying.

What actually changes between mid and low
The obvious difference is coverage: a mid-cut boot or shoe extends up over the ankle bone, and a low-cut shoe stops below it. Beyond that, the two versions of the same model line are usually built on the same last, outsole and midsole, so the fit through the forefoot and the traction underfoot don't change much. What does change:
- Ankle coverage and debris protection. The extra material keeps out trail dust, gravel and light splashes better than a low cut, which is why some hikers who never roll an ankle still prefer a mid for dirty or wet trail.
- Weight. More material means more weight, though on many model lines it's a smaller gap than people expect (see the Merrell example below).
- Break-in and flex. A taller cuff can feel stiffer around the ankle at first, especially on steep downhills, until the boot breaks in.
- Heat and breathability. More upper material around the ankle means less airflow in hot weather.

What the research says about cuff height and ankle support
It's a reasonable assumption that more material around the ankle means fewer sprains. The actual research is more mixed than that. A Cleveland Clinic review of the evidence notes that some studies find high-top footwear limits how far the foot rolls inward, but controlled trials comparing high-top and low-top shoes have found no significant difference in sprain rates, and in some research the muscles that correct an ankle roll actually activate more slowly in high-top shoes than low-top ones. The same review points to ankle strength, balance training and bracing as at least as important as shoe height, and calls a properly fitted shoe, at any cuff height, part of prevention.
The practical read: a mid boot's support comes as much from its outsole platform, midsole stiffness, heel counter and lacing as from the height of the cuff itself. None of that means a mid is a wasted choice. It means don't buy one expecting it to sprain-proof your ankle, and don't assume a low-cut shoe leaves you exposed if the rest of the shoe (fit, lacing, outsole) is solid.
When a mid makes more sense
Reach for a mid-cut boot when you're carrying real weight, moving over loose rock or scree, or you have a history of rolling the same ankle and want the added coverage on top of the conditioning work that actually moves the needle. When a low is enough
On maintained trails, in hot weather, or for faster, lighter days, a low-cut shoe usually does the job with less weight and less break-in time. Break-in and lacing: the part people skip
Whichever cut you land on, most of the "support" you actually feel on trail comes from how the boot is laced, not just its height. A mid boot laced loosely at the ankle can feel less stable than a low-cut shoe laced snugly through the instep. Give a new mid a few short walks before a long day out: the extra material around the ankle is stiffer out of the box than a low-cut collar, and it softens with wear.
If you're moving from a low-cut shoe to a mid boot for the first time, expect an adjustment period on steep downhills in particular, where the taller cuff can feel restrictive until it breaks in. That's normal, not a sign the boot doesn't fit. If it still feels restrictive after a proper break-in period, that's a fit problem worth addressing rather than pushing through.

The weight difference between the two is smaller than most people expect: about 15 g (half a pair) separates the mid from the low, according to Merrell's own listed weights. The real difference is the ankle coverage itself, not the load on your feet.
