What an insole can actually fix
An insole changes two things: how your arch is supported and how pressure is spread across the sole of your foot. That's it. The American Podiatric Medical Association describes over-the-counter inserts as devices that can offer "comfort, and support your arches," but says plainly that they "can't correct biomechanical foot problems or cure long-standing foot issues". No insole on this page treats plantar fasciitis, overpronation or any other condition. What they can do is change how your foot sits and loads inside a boot that otherwise fits.
If your feet hurt everywhere by the end of a hike, not just under one arch, an insole is the wrong place to start. Read why feet hurt after hiking first, since fit, socks and mileage usually matter more than which insole you drop in. If the pain is specifically heel or arch pain, the APMA's guidance on heel pain points to footwear with "shock-absorbent soles, rigid shanks, and supportive heel counters" as the starting point, with an insole as one part of that, not a replacement for it.

PowerStep, Spenco and Tread Labs say their insoles help with plantar fasciitis, overpronation or heel pain; we've quoted those as each maker's own claim, not as something we're asserting. Superfeet and CURREX make no such claims for the models below, so none are attributed to them.

Fit notes: sizing and trimming
Most hiking insoles are sold as a "Max" or "roomy to moderate" thickness, which means they're built for boots with a removable stock insole and some extra volume, not a snug low-volume boot. Superfeet says as much on its Hike Support and Hike Cushion listings. If your boots already fit snugly heel-to-toe, adding one of these can push your foot forward and change how your heel sits, which is its own path to blisters. Check how much heel slip is normal before you swap insoles, and re-lace afterward rather than assuming the fit is unchanged.
Sizes are typically sold in ranges (for example, a men's 9-11) rather than exact sizes, and most are trim-to-fit at the toe. Who should skip buying an insole
