Why footwear is the riskiest gift you can buy
A hiking boot or trail shoe fits a specific foot: length, width, arch height and volume all vary by brand and by last, and the fit that works for one person's "size 9" is often wrong for someone else's. The American Podiatric Medical Association frames proper shoe fit as an individual match, down to arch type, and points people toward having their feet measured rather than guessed (APMA). That's something only the hiker can do for themselves. If you want to see what "fits well" actually means before you buy anyone footwear, how hiking boots are supposed to fit walks through it.
Every pick below sidesteps that problem. Socks and toe socks come in bands that span two or three shoe sizes at once. Insoles are sold in paired ranges, not a single number. Gaiters and traction devices size the same way. Blister care doesn't size at all. If a gift lands a little off, it still works, and if it's really off, it's the kind of thing that's easy to exchange with the receipt.
What actually helps a hiker, gift-wrapped
Every category below fixes something a hiker actually deals with on the trail, not just something with a logo on it.
- Socks and toe socks are the single highest-leverage gift: friction and moisture cause blisters, and a better sock changes both. See the full best hiking socks lineup for more options.
- Insoles add arch support and cushioning inside boots the hiker already owns and already knows fit. The best insoles for hiking boots guide covers the rest of the lineup.
- Gaiters keep water, mud, snow and trail debris out of the boot opening; see every option in best hiking gaiters.
- Traction devices strap onto boots the hiker already owns for icy trails, so sizing runs in the same broad bands as gaiters.
- Blister care, tape, patches, balms and kits, has no sizing at all, and every hiker uses it eventually.

What to check before you buy
You don't need their exact shoe size for anything on this list, but a rough size helps: ask what shoe size they wear (or check a pair by the door) and match it to the sock, insole, gaiter or traction size band on the product page. For insoles, pick a general cushioned option rather than a specific arch height unless you already know they deal with a particular kind of foot pain, since arch profiles are the one place a guess can miss by a lot.
Keep the box, keep the receipt
Amazon's gift orders come with the confirmation email, which covers most returns and exchanges on its own. Several of the picks above go further: Wrightsock backs its Escape Crew with its own guarantee, and a sock or gaiter that's a size off is a much easier fix than a boot that doesn't fit right.
When a gift card beats a guess
If you genuinely don't know whether they run cold or hot, wool or synthetic, or which arch height fits them, a gift card to an outdoor retailer beats guessing across every category above. It's not a lesser gift, it's an honest one. If budget is the bigger constraint than the guesswork, our hiking gifts under $50 list narrows these same categories down by manufacturer list price.
How we chose
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Everyone in this category says they tested it. We didn't, and we say so. Every pick is scored from the brand's published specs, width and size charts, warranty terms and cited research, against the problem this page is about. The sources are listed at the bottom of the page.
Scores are editorial judgments from that published data, not lab results. Nobody pays for placement, and a missing spec is scored neutral, never guessed. The full rubric is on How We Choose.
