03 Wide Feet & Foot Shape Fix guide

Do KEEN Boots Run Wide?

Yes in the forefoot, and yes there is a real Wide on several models - but you have to find a different product page, and KEEN publishes no width letter at all.

What KEEN's standard fit actually is

KEEN's reputation for roomy footwear is not marketing invention - it comes from the shape of the last, which is broad through the toes with a comparatively snug heel. KEEN states the intent directly on the Newport H2 page: its fit "secures your heel while creating generous space across your forefoot for toes to spread out". That is a specific and unusual thing to claim, and it is why KEEN shoes work for a lot of people whose forefoot is wide while their heel is not - a very common foot shape that conventional width grading handles badly.

But "roomy standard" is not the same as "runs wide". KEEN publishes its standard fit as standard - on the Targhee IV Mid Waterproof the widths are listed as men's standard and Wide, and women's standard and Wide. If you take a D in other brands, a standard KEEN should fit you; it will just feel more generous in the toe box than, say, a Salomon. If you take a 2E or wider, the standard will not be enough and you need the Wide. For how width labelling works across the brands we cover, see hiking boot widths explained.

The Wide is a separate product, not a dropdown

This is the practical thing to know, and it is where most people give up and conclude KEEN does not make a Wide. On keenfootwear.com, the Wide is not a width option on the standard product page - it is its own product with its own URL and its own name. The men's Targhee IV Mid Waterproof and the men's Targhee IV Mid Waterproof Wide are two listings; so are the low Targhee IV Waterproof and the Targhee IV Waterproof Wide. If you search a model name and only see one page, you have probably found the standard one. Search the model name plus "wide", or browse KEEN's wide category, before concluding it does not exist.

Merrell does the same thing with its Wide Width products, which is why both brands are easy to under-rate on width availability - do Merrell boots run wide covers that side, down to the separate style numbers. The pattern matters when you shop through a third-party retailer too, because a retailer may stock the standard product and not the Wide one even though both exist.

Which KEEN models have a real Wide

Among the KEEN footwear we list, the Targhee IV Mid Waterproof has a dedicated Wide for men and for women - that women's Wide is worth noting, because women's wide hiking boots are far scarcer than men's across the whole market. The low Targhee IV Waterproof has a men's Wide as a separate product. The Hightrail Mid Waterproof appears in our registry as a dedicated men's Wide product - the Wide is how we found it. And the Newport H2 sandal is sold in a men's Wide as well as the standard width.

Not every KEEN model has one. The Revel IV Mid Polar and Revel IV High Polar winter boots are listed in men's D - Medium in sizes 7-15, with no Wide we could verify. So the honest summary is: KEEN offers a Wide on its core hiking and sandal lines, and not across the board - check the specific model rather than assuming the brand.

What KEEN does not publish, and why it matters

We re-checked KEEN's men's Targhee IV Mid Waterproof Wide product page in October 2026. It is a dedicated Wide listing, and it contains no statement about width at all - no letter, no circumference, no explanation of how the Wide differs from the standard. The word "Wide" in the product name is the entire specification.

That is a real gap. Compare it with Topo Athletic, which states that its men's wide is a 2E toe box over an E midfoot and heel, or La Sportiva, which states that its Wide Fit adds 7 mm of circumference and 2 mm of toe-box height. Those numbers let you decide before you order. With KEEN you are buying a direction rather than a dimension, which means ordering both and returning one is the only reliable method - so buy from a retailer whose returns you are comfortable with. Per OrthoInfo (AAOS), the test once they arrive is simple: laced up, you should still be able to wiggle your toes, with no pressure across the widest part of the foot. The full set of checks is in how hiking boots should fit.

If KEEN's Wide still is not wide enough

Because KEEN publishes no letter, there is no way to know whether its Wide corresponds to an E, a 2E or something in between - so if you know you need a 4E or wider, go to the brands that publish those numbers. Propet lists the Ridge Walker in men's M (D), E (W), X (3E) and XX (5E); Orthofeet lists the Ridgewood in D, EE and 4E; Skechers lists an Extra Wide. All three are ranked in best hiking boots for wide feet, and the low-cut equivalents are in best hiking shoes for wide feet.

If your problem is the toe box specifically rather than overall width, a foot-shaped last may serve you better than any Wide - see best wide toe box hiking shoes. And if you are weighing KEEN against the other roomy mainstream boot, KEEN Targhee IV vs Merrell Moab 3 compares them on everything except width, because on width they tie.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Does KEEN make wide hiking boots?
Yes, on several models - but as a separate product rather than a width option on the standard page. The Targhee IV Mid Waterproof has a dedicated Wide for men and women; the low Targhee IV and the Hightrail Mid have a men's Wide. The Revel IV Polar winter boots are listed in D - Medium only.
How much wider is a KEEN Wide?
KEEN does not say. We re-checked its men's Targhee IV Mid Waterproof Wide page in October 2026 and it publishes no width letter, circumference or measurement. If you need a documented width, Topo and La Sportiva publish theirs.
Should I size up in KEEN instead of buying the Wide?
No. Sizing up adds length, not width, and a longer boot lets your foot slide forward on descents - which causes bruised toes rather than solving pressure at the forefoot. Buy the Wide product instead.
Does KEEN run wide for women too?
The Targhee IV Mid Waterproof is sold in a women's standard and a dedicated women's Wide, which is unusual in this price tier. Coverage is thinner than on the men's side across KEEN's range - see best hiking boots for women with wide feet.
