What Oboz publishes that other brands don't
Most of the work on this site is reading what brands put in writing and refusing to fill in the rest. That makes Oboz unusually easy to write about, because Oboz publishes three things its competitors mostly skip.
The first is a heel-to-toe drop on every hiker. Merrell does not publish a drop on the Moab 3. Salomon publishes no drop anywhere in the X Ultra or Quest range. LOWA publishes no drop on the Renegade. Oboz gives you a number on each boot - 8 mm on the Sawtooth X line, 12 mm on the Bridger line - and that single figure tells you more about how a boot will feel on a long descent than any amount of marketing language about support.
The second is a description of the last in letters. The Bridger Ridge Mid page states the standard fit as "C in the heel and D in the forefoot" with medium-high volume. Almost nobody does this. KEEN tells you its forefoot is "generous" without a letter; Merrell publishes Medium and Wide without saying what either means. A boot that is narrower at the heel than the forefoot is exactly what a lot of hikers need and can never find, and Oboz is the brand that says so out loud. Our guide to hiking boot widths covers why those letters move between brands.
The third is a real footbed, described in detail. The O FIT Insole is triple-density EVA with, in Oboz's words, "a firm molded shell, deep heel cup, and medium-to-high arch support". Most boots in this price range ship with a flat die-cut foam sheet that the first thing a knowledgeable buyer does is throw away. That difference is worth money, and we come back to it below.
Drop, widths and membrane, side by side
These are the four three-season mids in the ranking. Read the Drop row and the Widths row first - between them they decide almost every Oboz purchase.

| Intended use | Not published | Not published | Not published | "Best for ... Rugged Trails With Heavy Packs" |
Two patterns jump out of that table, and both are buying advice rather than trivia. The first is that the width range and the membrane move in opposite directions: the two boots with Oboz's in-house B-DRY membrane are the two sold in a Wide, and both GORE-TEX models are Standard only. If you have wide feet and you also want the GORE-TEX name, Oboz cannot currently sell you both. The second is that the Bridger line sits at 12 mm of drop and the Sawtooth X line at 8 mm, so choosing a line is choosing a ramp angle before you have even looked at a color.
How we ranked these
Problem fit carries 30% on this page, fit range 25%, support and protection 20%, durability 15% and weight 10%. Problem fit here means how well a model does the job an Oboz buyer actually turns up for: getting a normal-to-wide foot into a supportive waterproof hiker that arrives with a usable footbed already in it. That is why the Bridger Mid Waterproof wins despite not having GORE-TEX, and why the insulated Bridger 8" finishes last on a hiking page despite scoring well on fit - it is a snow boot, and we score it as one. The full rubric lives on how we choose. Nothing here is a test result: we read and cite what Oboz and its retailers publish, and an unpublished spec is scored as neutral rather than guessed.

What to actually do with the drop number
Oboz gives you a drop on every boot, which is only useful if you know what to do with it. Drop is the difference in stack height between the heel and the forefoot. A 12 mm drop means your heel sits 12 mm higher than your toes; an 8 mm drop means the platform is closer to level. Everything else about the two boots can be identical and they will still feel different on a hill.
The practical rule, and the honest limits on it. A higher drop (the 12 mm Bridger line) shifts load off the calf and Achilles and onto the forefoot, which suits hikers who feel tightness in the calf on climbs or who have come from traditional boots, nearly all of which were built this way. A lower drop (the 8 mm Sawtooth X line) spreads load more evenly and asks a little more of the calf, which suits hikers whose complaint is forefoot pressure or bruised toes on long descents. If you already know which end of your foot hurts after a hike, the drop row in the table above is the fastest decision on this page. Where it hurts and why is the subject of why do my hiking boots hurt and ball of foot pain hiking.
Two caveats we will not pretend away. First, 4 mm is a small difference and plenty of hikers will not notice it; drop matters most to people who are already at a limit. Second, a drop figure without a stack figure is half the story, and Oboz does not publish stack - a 12 mm drop on a thin platform and a 12 mm drop on a thick one are different shoes. So treat the number as a tiebreaker between two Oboz boots, not as a cross-brand yardstick, and never switch a long-standing drop by a large step in one go: the calf and Achilles need time to adapt, which is the same reason a break-in period exists at all - how to break in hiking boots covers doing that without paying for it in blisters.
B-DRY or GORE-TEX: the one real fork in the line
Oboz sells both, and the choice is not about which keeps more water out - nobody publishes a comparable hydrostatic figure for the two, so we will not rank them. The choice is about what else comes attached to each one.
B-DRY is Oboz's own membrane. It appears on the Bridger Mid, the Sawtooth X Mid, the Sawtooth X Low and the insulated Bridger 8", and those are the models Oboz offers in a Wide. There is no third-party guarantee behind it, only Oboz's own warranty, which is a genuine downside if a membrane failure is the thing you are worried about. GORE-TEX appears on the Sawtooth X Pro Mid and the Bridger Ridge Mid, and the Sawtooth X Pro uses GORE-TEX Invisible Fit, a thinner laminate bonded closer to the upper. Both GORE-TEX boots come in Standard width only.
So the honest version is: the membrane decision is really a width decision in disguise. Wide feet mean B-DRY. If you want to understand what either membrane costs you in breathability on a hot day, read waterproof vs. non-waterproof hiking boots before you commit - and if your feet are soaked from the inside rather than the outside, best hiking socks for sweaty feet is a much cheaper fix than a new boot.
The footbed is half of what you're paying for
Every Oboz here arrives with the O FIT Insole: triple-density EVA, a firm molded shell, a deep heel cup and what Oboz describes as medium-to-high arch support, with cushioned pods under the heel and forefoot. Compare that with what falls out of most boots in the same bracket - a flat sheet of foam with no shell and no heel cup at all.
This matters in two directions. If you have medium-to-high arches and you have been buying an aftermarket insole with every pair of boots, an Oboz may be the first boot where you do not need to, which quietly changes the real price of the boot. But if you have flat feet, or you already wear a prescribed orthotic, a firm molded shell with a medium-to-high arch is the opposite of helpful, and you will be removing the thing you paid for. Check the shape of your own arch first - best insoles for hiking boots explains how to tell, and best hiking boots for flat feet is the right page if yours are low.
One more practical note: a thick structured footbed takes up volume. If you are between sizes in an Oboz, the footbed is part of the reason, and swapping it for a thinner one changes the fit of the whole boot. Our how should hiking boots fit guide covers the checks to run in the first ten minutes, before a boot is too worn to return.
What Oboz doesn't publish
For a brand that is unusually forthcoming on drop and last shape, Oboz leaves three gaps worth knowing about.
It does not state whether a quoted weight is per shoe or per pair. The Bridger Mid's "19.0 oz / 538 g" reads like a single shoe next to the Sawtooth X Pro's 18.6 oz, but Oboz never says, so we do not convert those figures or stack them against a Danner number that is published per pair. It does not publish a lug depth on any model here, which means the only two boots in our whole registry with a published lug depth are still the two Merrell Moab 3 mids - see best hiking boots for mud for why that one number is so hard to find. And it publishes no stack height, so you can know the drop without knowing how much foam sits under you.
There is also no resole or recraft program. An Oboz is a boot you replace rather than rebuild, which puts it behind Danner and LOWA's Camino on that specific measure - most durable hiking boots ranks the brands that commit to a second life in writing, and when to replace hiking boots covers the signs that a midsole is done regardless of what the upper looks like.
Finally, a live stock note rather than a spec gap: when we checked on October 23, 2026, the men's Sawtooth X Pro Mid GTX page carried a "Last Few Remaining!" banner, and the insulated Bridger pages have shown the same message on previous checks. Oboz rotates colorways out, so if a specific boot and width is the one you want, availability may decide this for you before any of our scoring does.
Who should skip Oboz
Skip Oboz if you need a boot that can be resoled - nothing in the line can be. Skip it if you have flat feet or wear your own orthotic and resent paying for a structured footbed you will remove on day one. Skip it if you want wide feet and GORE-TEX in the same boot, because that combination does not exist here today; best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet covers the brands that do offer it. And skip the Bridger line specifically if a 12 mm drop bothers your calves or your forefoot on descents - the Sawtooth X line exists for exactly that reason.
Buy Oboz if you want a supportive waterproof mid that arrives ready to walk in, with a drop you can look up and a width range that covers a genuinely wide foot. The two head-to-heads most Oboz shoppers end up reading are Oboz Sawtooth vs KEEN Targhee and best hiking boot brands, which puts Oboz against the rest of the field on fit, widths and warranty.
