What actually works in mud, and what does not
Mud is a grip problem and a sealing problem at the same time, and the boots that solve one often fail the other. The grip half comes down to two things: how deep the lugs are, and how far apart. Deep lugs bite into soft ground instead of skating across it, and widely-spaced lugs let the mud fall out again as the sole flexes - a tightly-packed tread fills up on the first fifty metres and then you are walking on a smooth wedge of clay. Only a minority of brands publish a lug depth at all, which is why that one number does so much work in this ranking. Of our picks, both Moab 3 mids publish 5 mm; the others publish an outsole name and leave the depth to you.
The sealing half is about height, not membrane. Every boot on this list is waterproof, and in mud that matters less than you would think, because mud goes over the top rather than through the upper. A 4 in shaft keeps you dry in a churned-up trail; a 6 in shaft like the Vioz's keeps you dry in a bog crossing. A membrane also makes the boot slower to dry out once mud does get in - the trade is covered honestly in waterproof vs. non-waterproof hiking boots. If what you are actually fighting is water rather than mud, how to keep feet dry hiking is the better starting point.

How we ranked these for mud
Problem fit carries 40% and is scored on published mud evidence: a stated lug depth, a membrane, and shaft height. Support and protection is 20% because churned ground twists a boot more than a dry trail does, durability 20%, fit range 15% and weight just 5% - a mud boot is allowed to be heavy. The Salomon Speedcross 6 is included although it is a shoe rather than a boot, because it is the one product in our registry whose published intended use is mud and soft ground. The standing rubric is on how we choose.

Gaiters, socks and getting the boots dry again
A gaiter does more for a muddy hike than an upgrade from one boot to another. It closes the gap at the collar where mud and water actually enter, and it keeps the laces clean enough to untie at the end of the day. A full-height gaiter over a mid boot turns a 4 in cuff into a 15 in one; our picks and what each one attaches to are in best hiking gaiters. Pair that with a sock that keeps working when damp - merino or a synthetic blend, never cotton - from best hiking socks.
Drying matters more than cleaning. Knock the worst of the mud off while it is wet, rinse with cool water, and then dry the boots slowly at room temperature with the insoles out and the tongues open. Heat sources - radiators, car heaters, fires - shrink leather and separate adhesives, and they are the single most common way a good pair of boots gets ruined in one evening. For boots you intend to keep for years, the care routine is part of the purchase: leather vs. synthetic hiking boots covers what each upper needs, and most durable hiking boots covers which of these can be resoled when the lugs finally go.
Who should skip all of these
If the mud is seasonal and your hikes are otherwise dry and hot, buying a dedicated mud boot is overkill - a non-waterproof shoe plus a gaiter handles occasional mud and is far more pleasant the rest of the year. If your problem is snow and slush rather than mud, best winter hiking boots and microspikes vs. Yaktrax are the right pages. And if your feet get wet from the inside rather than the outside - sweat rather than mud - no membrane will help; best hiking socks for sweaty feet is the fix.
