How to Keep Your Feet Dry While Hiking
Wet feet on the trail come from two different directions: water getting in, or sweat that can't get out. Fix the one you actually have.

Figure out which kind of wet you have
"Wet feet" usually means one of two different problems, and they have different fixes. Either water is getting in from outside (rain, puddles, stream splashes, wet grass) and your boots aren't keeping it out, or your feet are producing more sweat than your socks and footwear can move away, so they're wet from the inside regardless of the weather. Damp, perspiring feet also chill faster in cold conditions, which the American Podiatric Medical Association flags as a reason to keep feet dry even on cold-weather hikes, not just hot ones (APMA, accessed Sep 2026).
Free fixes to try first
Before buying anything, these cost nothing and solve a surprising share of wet-foot complaints:
- Change into a dry pair of socks at a lunch break on a long or wet hike, and let the wet pair air out clipped to your pack.
- Loosen your laces briefly at breaks so air can circulate, then relace properly before moving on.
- Drop your gaiters or pant cuffs over your boots, not into them, so water sheds outward instead of funneling down inside the collar.
- If sweat is the real problem, the American Podiatric Medical Association recommends wicking socks made of natural or acrylic fiber blends over cotton, and changing socks mid-day if you perspire heavily (APMA, accessed Sep 2026).
Block water at the collar with gaiters
Even a fully waterproof boot has a top: the collar where the boot meets your leg. Rain running down your pants, wet brush, splashback and shallow puddles all get in there, not through the waterproof upper. A gaiter closes that gap by sealing over the boot collar and lower pant leg. Sock material matters more than people think
A waterproof boot with the wrong socks still ends in wet feet, just from sweat instead of rain. Merino wool and synthetic blends move moisture away from skin; cotton absorbs it and holds it against your foot, which is also a friction and blister risk on top of the wet feeling. Match your setup to the conditions
The right combination of boot, sock and gaiter changes with the weather, not just with how wet the trail looks. On a hot, humid day, even a non-waterproof mesh shoe with a wicking sock can leave your feet damp from sweat alone; that's normal and not a sign your gear has failed. On a cold, steady rain, a waterproof boot plus a full-coverage gaiter and a wool sock is doing three separate jobs: the boot blocks water from below and the sides, the gaiter blocks it from above, and the wool keeps whatever moisture does get through from feeling as cold against your skin. On a dry but freezing day, the moisture problem is almost entirely internal: your own sweat, trapped by the insulation you need for warmth, so a wicking base layer sock matters even though there's no rain in sight at all. Treat "keep feet dry" as three overlapping jobs (block outside water, manage sweat, add warmth) rather than one setting to get right.
When the footwear itself is the problem
If you've tried dry socks, a mid-hike sock change and gaiters and your feet are still wet, look at the boot or shoe itself. A non-waterproof shoe with worn-out water resistance will soak straight through in steady rain. A waterproof boot that runs hot on warm days can leave your feet damp with sweat even with zero rain at all. Both are membrane problems, not sock problems. Drying wet boots overnight
Pull the insoles out as soon as you're done hiking; they hold a surprising amount of moisture and dry much faster separated from the boot. Loosen the laces fully and open the tongue wide so air can move through the whole boot, not just the opening. Stuff the toe box loosely with a dry towel, newspaper or a dedicated boot dryer insert, and swap it out once it's damp rather than leaving one soaked wad in overnight. Avoid drying boots directly next to a campfire, heater vent or radiator: GORE-TEX's own care guidance for waterproof gear notes that heat is part of restoring the water-repellent finish, but concentrated direct heat on footwear risks damaging adhesives and the membrane itself, so gentle, ambient drying is the safer default (GORE-TEX, accessed Sep 2026).
On a multi-day trip, plan for boots that don't fully dry overnight. Wet boots in the morning are common, not a sign you did something wrong, and a dry pair of camp shoes or sandals to change into at the end of each day gives your feet and your hiking socks a real break even if the boots themselves stay damp.
