Best Hiking Socks for Men

If you hike in a mid or high boot, the sock has to clear the collar - a micro crew that stops underneath it is why the back of your ankle is raw. Here is what clears it.

Why cuff height matters more than thickness

Friction blisters come from rubbing on the skin (MedlinePlus, accessed Sep 2026), and on a men's foot in a hiking boot the most common place for that rubbing is not the heel - it is the back of the ankle, where the top of a mid or high boot collar meets skin because the sock ended half an inch too low. Most men buy a cushioned micro crew, which is the correct sock for a trail runner and the wrong one for a boot.

The published numbers make this easy to get right. Darn Tough lists its men's Hiker Boot sock at “average 11 in. from heel to cuff - expect them to show about 5 in. above a standard hiking boot” (Darn Tough, accessed Sep 2026), against an average 8.5 in for the men's Hiker Micro Crew (Darn Tough). Two and a half inches decides whether leather touches your Achilles for six hours.

Size range is the other men's-specific issue, and it is a simple one: if you wear a 14 or 15, a lot of sock lines are closed to you. Darn Tough runs the Hiker Boot in XS to XXL; Feetures publishes men's shoe sizes 6-8.5, 9-12 and 12.5-15.5 along with a right- and left-specific “Anatomical Design” and “Targeted Arch Compression” (Feetures, accessed Sep 2026); Smartwool's unisex Hike Full Cushion Crew tops out at men's 14.5 (Smartwool).

How we ranked these

Problem fit (how much the sock reduces friction on a men's foot in the boot he actually wears) carries 40%, fit range 25%, support and protection 15%, durability and warranty 15%, weight 5%. Durability rewards a published guarantee rather than our impression of a knit, which is why Darn Tough's unconditional lifetime guarantee shows up in the scores. What it gets right

  • Boot height clears the collar of a mid or high boot instead of ending under it
  • Full cushion terry from cuff to toe, not just underfoot
  • Men's run XS to XXL, the widest size range of any sock in this registry
  • Lifetime guarantee

What it doesn't

  • Midweight full cushion is warm for summer hiking
  • Women's sizing stops at L (shoe 11.5)
  • Taller shaft takes longer to dry than a micro crew

Skip it if…

…you hike in low shoes or trail runners: the shaft will bunch above a low collar with nothing to hold it, and a micro crew is the right height.

Skip it if…

…you want a thin liner to wear under another sock: this is a cushioned midweight hiking sock, not a liner.

Sizing notes for men's socks

Buy by the published shoe-size range, not by S/M/L, and pick the height from the boot: boot-height for a mid or high cut, micro crew for a low shoe or trail runner. If you are between sizes, size down rather than up - a sock with slack in the foot bunches under the arch, and that bunch is a hot spot. Carry a dry spare pair on anything longer than a couple of hours; swapping at lunch removes the moisture half of the friction problem for free.

If your feet are soaking the sock whatever the temperature, the sock choice changes and best hiking socks for sweaty feet is the right list. For summer specifically, see best hiking socks for hot weather; for freezing trails, best hiking socks for cold weather. If the rubbing is between your toes rather than around your ankle, only a toe sock fixes it - best toe socks and liner socks covers those. The women's version of this list is best hiking socks for women, and the head-term roundup is best hiking socks.

One note on the double-layer option. Wrightsock's construction puts two layers against each other so the sliding happens between the layers rather than against your skin (Wrightsock). It is bulkier than a single sock, so it needs a boot with room; if your boot is already snug, fix the boot first. And if you want the merino-brand question settled, Darn Tough vs. Smartwool puts the two big lines head to head.

Who should skip all of these

If your heel lifts every step or your toes slam the front on descents, the boot is wrong and no sock will rescue it. Start at heel slipping in hiking boots and toes hurting hiking downhill, and try a heel-lock lacing pattern before you spend anything. If a blister has already formed, Leukotape vs. moleskin is the page you want instead.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How tall should a men's hiking sock be?
Tall enough to clear the collar of your boot. Darn Tough's men's Hiker Boot sock is published at an average 11 in from heel to cuff, showing about 5 in above a standard hiking boot (Darn Tough); a micro crew averages 8.5 in, which is right for low shoes and trail runners.
What size hiking socks do men's lines go up to?
Darn Tough runs its men's hiking socks from XS to XXL, and Feetures publishes men's shoe sizes up to 15.5 (Feetures). Unisex lines usually top out lower: Smartwool's Hike Full Cushion Crew XL covers men's 12 to 14.5 (Smartwool).
Are cotton socks really that bad for hiking?
For long days, yes - cotton holds moisture against skin and stays wet, and moisture is one of the three ingredients in a friction blister (MedlinePlus). A merino or synthetic knit moves water away and keeps its shape when damp, which is the part that matters.
Should men wear thicker hiking socks?
Only if the boot has the room. Thickness is a fit variable, not a quality one: a midweight sock in a snug boot creates pressure, and a lightweight sock in a roomy boot creates movement. Fit the sock to the boot you own.
Do double-layer socks work?
For chronic hot spots they often do. The two layers slide against each other rather than against skin (Wrightsock), which removes the friction at the source. They are bulkier, so check that your boot has room before you commit.
