06 Boots vs Trail Runners Best picks
Best Trail Runners for Women
The women's version of a trail shoe is not always the same shoe in smaller sizes - and it is often sold in fewer widths. These are the models where the women's line actually gives you a fit choice.

What actually goes wrong in a women's trail shoe
Trail shoes get returned for two reasons, and neither is cushioning. The first is volume: a shoe built on a higher-volume last leaves the midfoot loose, so the foot slides forward on descents and the toes hit the front on every step down. The second is width: if the forefoot spreads when you load it and the only version sold is a standard width, no lacing trick fixes it.
Both of those are fit problems you can check before you buy, because brands publish the widths they sell. The catch on the women's side is that the published list is often shorter than the men's one. The men's HOKA Speedgoat 7 is sold in D and 2E; the women's Speedgoat 7 is listed in B alone (Running Warehouse, accessed Sep 2026). That is not a flaw in the shoe. It is a reason to start your shortlist from the width chart rather than from a review, and it is exactly how this list is ordered.
The other thing worth saying plainly: a trail shoe is not a road shoe with a different upper. OrthoInfo, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' patient site, describes a trail shoe as having “a deeper tread pattern for solid traction” and offering “more stability across the shoe than a normal running shoe” (OrthoInfo, accessed Sep 2026). If you are weighing a pair of these against the road shoes already in your closet, we work that decision through in trail runners vs. running shoes.
How we ranked these for a women's fit
We weighted problem fit (how much of a genuine women's fit choice the shoe gives you) at 30%, fit range at 20%, weight at 20%, support and protection at 15% and durability at 15%. Weight carries more here than on our boot lists because a trail runner's whole argument is that it is lighter than a boot; if you are giving up ankle coverage, the shoe should be measurably light in exchange. Every number comes from a published spec page, never from our own testing.

Width notes, brand by brand
New Balance publishes the women's Hierro v9 in B and D (Running Warehouse), which in women's sizing means D is the wide. Saucony lists the women's Peregrine 16 in B and D (Running Warehouse), and Brooks does the same for the women's Cascadia 20 (Running Warehouse). Topo goes a different route and sells the women's MTN Racer 4 as Standard and Wide across the whole 6.0 to 12.0 run (Topo Athletic).
If width is the whole problem rather than one factor among several, our best trail runners for wide feet roundup ranks purely on fit range and covers the men's line as well. If your arches collapse inward when you stand, best trail runners for flat feet is the more useful starting point. And if you are not sure whether you should be in a trail runner at all, start with hiking boots vs. trail runners.
Who should skip all of these
Skip trail runners if you carry a heavy multi-day pack, if you are still rehabbing an ankle, or if your regular trails are loose rock and scree. All three are cases where a stiffer platform and a mid cut earn their weight; see best hiking boots for women for the women's-last boots instead, or best hiking shoes for weak ankles if stability is the deciding factor. Trail runners also wear out faster than boots: a shoe with a bald outsole on wet rock is worse than any boot you own, and when to replace hiking boots covers the signs to watch for.
Men's versions of these shoes are usually sold in more published widths than the women's ones - best trail runners for men ranks the same field on the men's width letters, and best trail runners for beginners is the list to start from if this is a first pair.
