06 Boots vs Trail Runners Best picks
Best Salomon Hiking Boots
Salomon sells fit systems: a chassis in the midsole, a wrap in the upper and a lace you pull once. What it mostly does not sell is width - and for women it barely sells width at all.

What you're actually buying from Salomon
Salomon came to hiking from ski boots and trail running, and it shows in what the brand chooses to engineer and what it chooses to leave out. Every hiker in this list is built around a fit-and-stability system rather than around materials: an Advanced Chassis (or the 4D version of it) molded into the midsole to resist twisting, a sensiFIT wrap that pulls the upper around the foot, a Contagrip outsole, and quickLACE - a bungee lace you tighten with one pull. That is a genuinely different design philosophy from Merrell's leather-and-Vibram approach, and for hikers on uneven ground it is the reason to buy Salomon.
The flip side is that Salomon publishes remarkably little you can look up. Across the models here, the retailer pages give no drop on most, no stack height, no lug depth, no shaft height, and weights that are stated without a size or a basis - the Quest 5 GTX and Quest Echo GTX are both listed simply as "1 lb", which could be one boot or a pair. We will not convert a figure like that into a comparison, so the weight column on this page is deliberately thin. What Salomon does publish, clearly and consistently, is the chassis, the membrane and the width letter - so those are what this page ranks on. If you want a boot field where the numbers are all on the table, our hiking boot comparison chart shows which brands publish what.
Chassis, membrane and width, side by side
These four are the adult hiking core of the line. The Widths row is the one that decides most purchases, and it is also where the line has a hole in it.

Read down the Widths column and the shape of the line appears. The X Ultra 5 family - mid and low - is sold in a men's D - Medium and a men's E - Wide, and the Wide is a separate product with its own listing. The Quest family, which is the stiffer, taller, more supportive end of the range, has no wide at all for either gender. And every women's Salomon hiker verified here is B - Medium, full stop. If you are a man with wide feet, Salomon has exactly one mid boot for you. If you are a woman with wide feet, Salomon currently has none, and no amount of sizing up fixes a last that is narrow through the forefoot.
That is worth stating plainly because it is the single most common reason a Salomon purchase goes wrong. Salomon lasts are snug by design - the sensiFIT wrap is a feature, not a flaw - and a snug wrap on a wide foot is a pressure point, not a secure fit. If your feet are wide, best hiking boots for wide feet and best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet are better starting points than this page.
How we ranked these
Problem fit carries 30% here, support and protection 25%, fit range 20%, durability 15% and weight 10% - a weighting that suits a brand whose entire proposition is structure. Problem fit on this page means how well the model does the job a Salomon buyer comes for: stability on uneven ground, with a published chassis and a published width rather than an implied one. That is why the X Ultra 5 Mid GTX edges the more heavily built Quest 5 GTX: the Quest has more chassis, the X Ultra has a width range, and most hikers need the second one more than the first. The standing rubric lives on how we choose, and nothing here comes from testing - we read and cite what the maker and its retailers publish.

The women's width gap
Salomon's women's line is a genuinely good set of boots sold in one width. The Quest Echo GTX is a women's-specific high-top built on the Advanced Chassis 4D, which is a real engineering commitment rather than a men's boot in a smaller size - and it is published in B - Medium only. The women's X Ultra 5 Mid GTX is B - Medium only. Where Merrell lists a women's Wide on the Moab 3 Mid Waterproof in sizes 5-12 (see best Merrell hiking boots) and Columbia lists a women's Wide on the Newton Ridge Amped (see best Columbia hiking boots), Salomon lists nothing.
There is one mitigating detail worth knowing: Salomon's quickLACE and sensiFIT construction do a better job than conventional lacing of taking up volume on a narrow foot, because one pull tightens the whole upper evenly. That makes Salomon an unusually good choice at the opposite end of the problem - we rank it for that reason on best hiking boots for narrow feet. The same mechanism is exactly wrong on a wide foot.
If you are between the two, measure before you order rather than guessing from your street-shoe size; how hiking boots should fit sets out the measurement and the thumb-width check, and hiking boot widths explained covers why a D in one brand is not a D in another.
quickLACE: the feature people either love or return
Every adult Salomon on this page uses a bungee lace with a pull tab and a lace pocket instead of conventional eyelets and a bow. Pull once and the whole upper closes; clip the tab into the tongue pocket and you are done. Two consequences follow, and both are real.
The good one: the closure is even and repeatable. You get the same tension every time, which matters a great deal if your heel lifts, because inconsistent lacing is one of the main causes of heel movement and the blisters that follow. The bad one: you give up the ability to lace unevenly on purpose - no surgeon's knot over the instep, no window lacing around a hot spot, no skipping an eyelet to relieve pressure over a high instep. Those techniques are among the most effective free fixes in hiking footwear, and a bungee system removes them. If you already know you need one of them, that is a reason to buy a conventionally laced boot instead; the techniques themselves are in hiking boot lacing techniques, and the heel-lift fix is in heel slipping in hiking boots.
The other honest note on the line is durability. Salomon publishes no resole program for any boot here, and the X Ultra uppers are textile and Matryx rather than leather, so these are replace-rather-than-recraft boots. The Quest models use a leather upper, which lasts longer, but still with no published resole path. That is normal at this price; it is just worth knowing you are buying a fit system and a chassis rather than an heirloom. Most durable hiking boots covers the brands that commit to a second life in writing.
Contagrip is a family of names, not a compound
Every Salomon on this page lists a Contagrip outsole, and three different Contagrips appear across the seven: All Terrain Contagrip on the X Ultra 5 mid and low, Winter Contagrip on the Snowpilot, and plain Contagrip on the junior XA Pro V8. The Quest 5 GTX page we checked lists the outsole only as "rubber", with no compound named at all. It is worth knowing what that does and does not tell you.
Contagrip is Salomon's umbrella brand for its outsole rubbers, and the suffix describes the intended surface rather than a measured property. Salomon publishes no durometer, no rubber hardness figure and no lug depth for any model here, so there is no way to compare its grip with, say, a Vibram Megagrip sole on published data - and we will not pretend otherwise. What the naming does usefully signal is the design target: Winter Contagrip on the Snowpilot is a cold-weather compound, which matters because rubber stiffens as it gets colder and a summer compound loses grip on ice. If ice is your actual problem, the compound is less effective than a spike anyway; microspikes vs. Yaktrax is the honest comparison, and best winter hiking boots covers the boots built for it.
Who should skip Salomon
Skip Salomon if your feet are wide and you are a woman, because the line does not serve you - that is a fitting fact, not an opinion. Skip it if you need to lace around a specific pressure point, because quickLACE will not let you. Skip it if you want published numbers to compare, because drop, stack, lug depth and a usable weight figure are absent across the range. And skip the Quest models specifically if you are day hiking with a light pack: that much chassis and cuff is weight you carry and never use, and the X Ultra 5 Mid or a low shoe from best hiking shoes does the job with less boot.
Buy Salomon if you hike on uneven, rocky, rooty, off-camber ground and want a boot engineered to resist twisting under you - that is what an Advanced Chassis is for, and it is the clearest case in the brand. It is also why Salomon dominates our best hiking boots for ankle support ranking, and why the two in-house head-to-heads worth reading before you buy are Salomon X Ultra vs Salomon Quest, which settles how much boot you actually need, and Merrell Moab vs Salomon X Ultra, which is the width-against-chassis decision in a single page.
