A last name instead of a width
Every brand we cover has one habit that makes it harder to buy than it needs to be, and with La Sportiva it is this: the brand publishes the name of the last the boot is built on, and almost never a width. The Nucleo High II GTX is built on the Tempo last. The Ultra Raptor 3 Mid GTX is "Tempo 2 / Medium". The TX5 EVO Mid GTX is "Traverse" with a "Performance" fit. None of those is a letter you can compare against anything.
That matters because a last name tells you the brand's intention and not your foot's dimensions. "Performance" on an approach boot means close-fitting, which is correct for standing on small edges and wrong for twelve flat miles. "Medium" on the Ultra Raptor 3 means medium by La Sportiva's standard, and the brand itself frames the Tempo 2 as a change - the page says the roomier fit "accommodates a wider range of foot shapes" than previous models, which is a quiet admission that the older shape was narrow.
The exception, and the reason the Nucleo wins this page, is that La Sportiva does build it on a separate Tempo Wide last with its own product page and its own size run. That is a genuine Wide, not a word. The honest caveat we have carried since we first logged the boot still applies: that Wide page does not clearly state whether it is the men's or women's version, and its 38-47.5 size range matches the men's - so a woman who needs width cannot confirm one exists. For the brands that publish a women's Wide unambiguously, see best hiking boots for women with wide feet.
European sizes only, and why that bites
Every boot on this page is published in European sizes: 38-47.5 on the Nucleo, 40-50.5 on the Ultra Raptor 3 Mid, 40-48.5 on the TX5 EVO Mid. There is no US column on the spec sheets. In practice you will be converting your size from a chart, and the conversion is not clean - a US men's 10 lands between EU 43.5 and 44 depending on whose table you use.
Two consequences, both practical. First, the conversion error and the width ambiguity compound: if you guess a half size up to buy width - the single most common footwear mistake we write about - you get a boot that is long and still narrow, and your toes hit the front on every descent. That failure is covered in why your toes hurt hiking downhill. Second, La Sportiva's size runs start high: the Ultra Raptor 3 Mid begins at EU 40, which is roughly a US men's 7.5, so smaller feet are simply not served by parts of this range.
Order from a retailer with free returns, and run the ten-minute fit checks in how should hiking boots fit before you wear the boot outside.
Last, membrane and outsole, side by side
The three current mid and high-cut boots in this ranking, with everything La Sportiva publishes about them. Read the Widths row for what is not there.
Note what the Lug depth row does: one boot of the three publishes a number, and it is the newest one. That is a pattern across the industry - the specs brands publish keep improving on new models, which makes cross-generation comparison inside a single brand harder than it should be. Our hiking boot comparison chart shows which brands publish which numbers across the whole registry.
How we ranked these
Problem fit carries 30% on this page, support and protection 25%, fit range 20%, durability 15% and weight 10%. Problem fit here means how well a model does the job a La Sportiva buyer turns up for: getting a protective, grippy, waterproof boot onto steep and rocky ground without carrying a traditional leather-boot's weight. The Nucleo wins because it is the only one that also answers a width question. The Bushido III finishes last not because it is a weak shoe - it is an excellent technical trail runner - but because this is a boot page, and we score it as the outlier it is.
The rubric is on how we choose. Nothing on this page is a test result: we read and cite what La Sportiva publishes, and an unpublished spec scores neutral rather than being guessed. That is why three of the five boots here score mid-range on fit despite being well-regarded - a boot cannot earn a fit score it refuses to document.

What you're really paying for: the rubber
If LOWA sells you a midsole and KEEN sells you a forefoot, La Sportiva sells you an outsole. It is the one area where the brand publishes more than its rivals, and it is worth understanding before you choose.
The Nucleo High II runs Vibram Nano XS-Trek. The TX5 EVO Mid runs Vibram Megagrip - the soft, sticky compound that is the default for scrambling and wet rock. The Ultra Raptor 3 Mid runs La Sportiva's own FriXion XF 2.0. All three add the Impact Brake System, a braking lug geometry La Sportiva has used for years, and the Ultra Raptor 3 adds an X-Axis and a Trail Bite Heel.
What we will not do is rank those compounds against each other, because no brand publishes a durometer or a wear rate for any of them and we do not test. What we can say is the trade-off the industry agrees on: a softer, stickier compound grips better on rock and wears faster on gravel and pavement. If most of your mileage is on hardpack or your approach involves road, that is a real cost - we go into it in are trail runners good for everyday use, and if you want grip without buying a new boot, microspikes vs Yaktrax covers the add-on route.
The one La Sportiva you can have rebuilt
The TX5 EVO Mid GTX is built with a Resole Platform insert in the midsole, and La Sportiva runs a ReSole Me program that routes the boot to an approved cobbler. That makes it the only boot in this ranking with a published second life, and it is a serious point in a category where most boots are disposable.
Be clear about what that does and does not buy you, though. A resole replaces the outsole, not the midsole: if the EVA under your foot has flattened, a new outsole gives you grip on a dead boot. The signs of a spent midsole are in when to replace hiking boots, and the brands that commit to a full rebuild rather than a sole swap are ranked in most durable hiking boots. The nubuck upper and the rubber toe cap are what make the TX5 worth rebuilding in the first place - a mesh boot will be worn through long before the sole is.
Two stock notes, because they affect what you can actually buy today. When we checked La Sportiva's US hiking collection on October 23, 2026, the 2023 colorways of the Nucleo High II - including the women's Wide - were listed at clearance prices alongside the full-price current models. Clearance on a specific colorway is not the same as a model being discontinued, but if the Nucleo in your size and width is the boot you want, that is a reason to move rather than wait.
The second note is about where you can buy. On the same date, the Nucleo High II GTX and the Spire GTX had no live Amazon offer, while La Sportiva's own site listed both. Where that happens, the buy button on this page sends you to an Amazon search for that exact model rather than printing a price we cannot verify, and you may well find the brand site or a specialist retailer is the better route. We would rather send you to the real stock than to a listing that pays us.
Who should skip La Sportiva
Skip La Sportiva if you need a published width letter to buy confidently - this is the brand least likely to give you one, and best hiking boots for wide feet is the better starting point if width is the whole problem. Skip it if you are a woman who needs width specifically, because the one Wide last in the range cannot be confirmed as a women's product. Skip it if you dislike converting sizes or if your foot is smaller than about a US men's 7.5, which is where several of these size runs begin.
Skip the TX5 EVO Mid in particular if your hiking is long and flat: a "Performance" fit on an approach last is a close shape, and the whole boot is built for standing on rock rather than cruising a trail. For that kind of day, read best hiking boots for rocky terrain to see what the alternatives look like, or go lower and lighter with best trail runners for hiking.
Buy La Sportiva if your trails are steep, rocky and technical, you want a named Vibram or FriXion compound underfoot, and you are willing to do the size conversion and order with returns available. The two other brand rankings most useful alongside this one are best LOWA hiking boots, which publishes width letters La Sportiva does not, and best hiking boot brands, which puts the whole field side by side.
