What "lightweight" means on a spec sheet, and why most claims are useless
There is no industry definition of a lightweight hiking boot, and that is a problem, because the word is on nearly every listing. What there is, on good product pages, is a published weight - and the first thing to check is not the number but the basis. A boot listed at "28 oz" could be one boot or a pair, and the difference is 100%. A boot listed at "13.75 oz" could be a women's 7 or a men's 11. Across our whole registry, brands state the basis clearly about half the time.
So this page ranks on published figures with a stated basis wherever one exists, and it says so where one does not. For reference, the useful mental scale for a mid-cut waterproof boot is roughly: under 13 oz a shoe is very light, 13-16 oz is light, 16-20 oz is normal, and above 20 oz a shoe you are into supportive backpacking territory - a Zamberlan 996 Vioz GTX is 715 g (25 oz) for half a pair. Which end you want depends on your load, not on your preference, and that is the argument in hiking boots vs. trail runners.
Published weights, side by side
Here are the five, with the specs that explain why each is as light as it is. Read the bottom rows as the price of the top row.
Converted to the same basis, the spread is narrower than it looks: the Danner's 28 oz per pair is 14 oz a shoe, which puts it between the Xero at 11.6 oz and the Columbia at 13.1 oz on one side, and the Topo at 15.9 oz and La Sportiva at 16.8 oz on the other. Five ounces a shoe sounds trivial written down. Over a 12-mile day it is thousands of repetitions of lifting that extra weight, which is why hikers notice boot weight far more than pack weight per ounce.
How we ranked these
Weight carries 20% on this page rather than our usual 10%, with problem fit at 30%, fit range 20%, support 15% and durability 15%. Problem fit here means something specific: a boot that is light and still does the job, rather than light because it left things out. That is why the Danner Trail 2650 ranks above two boots that weigh less - it is the only pick with a published shank, a named Vibram Megagrip compound and genuine GORE-TEX at this weight. The Xero takes the top spot on the strength of being the lightest verified waterproof mid with a 5,000-mile sole warranty behind it. The rubric is on how we choose; nothing here is a test result.

What you give up at each weight
Boot weight is not free to remove. It comes out of four places, and each one costs you something specific.
The shank or plate. A stiff midsole insert is what stops a boot folding over a rock and what keeps your arch from working all day on uneven ground. The Danner has a Trailguard TPU shank; the Topo has a full-length ESS rock plate. The Xero publishes neither - its own page lists no stack height, shank or rock plate - which is the honest reason it is the lightest. On sharp rock you will feel that.
The upper. Leather is heavy; ripstop and mesh are not. The Xero and the Danner both use ripstop or suede-and-textile uppers, and neither is recraftable, while the heavier leather boots on best Danner hiking boots can be rebuilt. A light boot is usually a replace-rather-than-repair boot.
The cuff. This is the one buyers misread most often. The Columbia Transverse is listed by Columbia as a "Shoe" whose shaft height is "Mid" - so if you came here for ankle coverage, check the cut before you buy. The La Sportiva Nucleo High II is the only genuinely high-cut boot in this list, and at 476 g a shoe it is remarkably light for that. Whether a cuff does what people hope is covered in do hiking boots prevent ankle sprains? and the cut comparison is in mid vs. low hiking shoes.
The outsole. Deep lugs in a dense compound weigh more than shallow lugs in a light one. The Columbia's 4 mm Omni-Grip lugs are shallower than the 5 mm on Columbia's own Newton Ridge boots, which is part of why it is 371 g. In mud that difference is the whole ballgame - best hiking boots for mud ranks for exactly that.
Boot weight vs pack weight: where the ounces actually matter
The old hiking rule of thumb - a pound on the feet equals five on the back - has never been supported by a published figure we can cite, so we will not repeat it as fact. What is beyond dispute is the mechanism: weight on your feet is lifted and swung with every stride, while weight on your back is carried. That is why hikers consistently report that dropping boot weight feels like more of a change than dropping the same weight from a pack.
The practical consequence runs the other way too. A light boot without a shank handles a light pack well and a heavy pack badly, because the load that the shank would have carried goes into your arch instead. If you are carrying 30 lb or more, buy from best backpacking boots and accept the weight; if you are day hiking with water and a jacket, nearly everything on this page is more boot than you need, and best hiking shoes or best trail runners for hiking will be lighter still. If your feet ache after long days rather than slip, feet hurt after hiking is the better starting point than a lighter boot.
Light and wide: a short list
Light boots are usually built on narrow performance lasts, so the overlap between "light" and "wide" is small. Of these five, two publish a real wide: the Columbia Transverse Hike in a men's Wide, and the La Sportiva Nucleo High II on a dedicated Tempo Wide last. The Danner Trail 2650 is men's D only. Topo lists no width options at all for the Trailventure 2 WP, despite the anatomical toe box. Xero states no widths either, though its foot-shaped toe box is wide by design - which is a different thing, as explained in hiking boot widths explained.
If you need light and wide together, those two are your starting point and the full field is in best hiking boots for wide feet. One more note on the two zero-drop picks here, the Xero and (at 5 mm) the Topo: a flat platform changes how your calf and Achilles load, so transition into it over a few weeks rather than taking a new pair straight onto a long descent. The same advice applies to the Altra line in best Altra hiking boots.
Who should skip a light boot
Skip the light end if you carry heavy packs, if you hike on sharp talus where a rock plate earns its weight, or if you want a boot you can resole - none of the lightest picks here publishes a rebuild path. Skip it if you need serious ankle structure: only the Nucleo High II is genuinely high-cut, and even that is a flexible boot with a 3D Flex hinge rather than a rigid cuff.
Buy light if your trails are maintained, your pack is day-sized and your complaint at the end of a hike is tiredness rather than pain or instability. That is most hikers, most weekends - and it is why so many people who buy a heavy boot end up wearing something from hiking boot alternatives instead. Before you commit, how to choose hiking boots runs the terrain-and-load decision from the start.
Two brand pages are useful if weight is your main filter, for opposite reasons. Best La Sportiva hiking boots includes the lightest GORE-TEX mid we have logged at 430 g per shoe, and explains what the mesh upper gives up to get there. Best LOWA hiking boots is the counterpoint: polyurethane midsoles make every boot in that range heavier than its class, and the page sets out what that extra weight actually buys.
